
With a roster that averages 75 players and a century-long tradition, football is one of the oldest and largest sports at Knox College, dating back to the first game against Monmouth College in 1888.
The Midwest Conference announced the 2009 Fall Academic All-Midwest Conference honorees on December 2, 2009. 30 Knox Student-Athletes were honored. In order for a student-athlete to be honored the athlete must be a sophomore, junior or senior and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 while lettering in any of the MWC fall sports.

Seven Knox College football players were named to the All-Midwest Conference Team, including one first-team selection - senior DE Tighe Burke. RB Dan Kizior was named to the All Midwest Conference second team as a kick returner. Five others earned honorable mention honors- senior OL Jim Schwab, senior LB Aaron Juarez, senior DB Jordan Raess, junior DB Calvin Zirkle and sophomore DE Elliot Madison.
On Monday, November 9, Head Football Coach Andy Gibbons announced his intention to step down as head coach. Athletic Director Chad Eisele will take the reins as head coach, while Coach Gibbons will remain on staff as the assistant coach and defensive coordinator.
Calvin Zirkle, a junior from Kankakee, IL (Bishop McNamara) has been named the Midwest Conference defensive performer of the week for his efforts in the Prairie Fire's 12-7 win over Lake Forest College on October 31st, 2009. The win is the first of the season for the Prairie Fire.
Tighe Burke, a senior from Winnetka, IL (New Trier High School) has been named Prairie Fire Performer of the Week. The senior Defensive End led the Knox defense, recording 6 total tackles, 3 of which were for loss, 2 quarterback sacks, forced a fumble and recovered another fumble in a hard fought loss to Carroll University on October 24, 2009.
On October 23rd, at 6pm 3 former Knox student athletes, and the 1919 undefeated Knox College football team will take their places amongst the greats of Knox College athletics, as they are set to be inducted into the Knox-Lombard Hall of Fame.
