Invisible Children: Knox Chapter

The "Displace Me" EventBefore Invisible Children was an international group, the conflict and war in Uganda went greatly unnoticed, often except for those who lived there. Now, since the founding of this organization in 2003 and the forming of the Knox chapter of Invisible Children in 2008, the organization is creating awareness of the situation in Africa worldwide. Funds raised by the Knox Chapter benefit the Layibi Secondary School in Northern Uganda.

Goals

  • Raise awareness about the children of Uganda and how they are being harmed by the war
  • Fundraise for rebuilding schools and homes destroyed in Uganda
  • Integrating the Galesburg and Galesburg High School communities in learning about Invisible Children
  • Working with other schools in fundraising efforts

Past events of the Knox Chapter

  • Documentary screenings of Invisible Children: Rough Cut
  • Selling t-shirts in Seymour Gallery to raise awareness and funding
  • Collaborating with clubs like Harambee to raise money through car washes
  • Sponsoring trips to Chicago for students involved with Invisible Children and The Rescue project: http://therescue.invisiblechildren.com

Past events of the international organization

  • Displace Me
    • Nationwide, 68,000 people left their homes for a night to experience being displaced, just like the displaced children in Uganda.
  • Global Night Commute (GNC)
    • Nationwide, over 80,000 people walked for miles to city centers in the United States and slept in the streets to make a visual protest for the children in Uganda. Even now, it is one of the largest demonstrations ever to take place for awareness of the situation in Africa.
